Cutting: In order to cut a material into the desired shape, devices such as shears and saw are used. These techniques are further subdivided into Laser cutting, Oxy-fuel cutting, and Plasma cutting. This process is generally used on parts which are asymmetric and have multiple holes and slots. Grinding: Grinding is a machining process where grinding wheel is used as the cutting tool. Machining has become the prime need of the hour because of the umpteen benefits it provides to the final product. A wide variety of tools are used in this process including handheld power tools like angle grinders and die grinders, grindstones and bench grinders. Milling: Milling is a material removal process where the unwanted material is cut away with the help of milling machines.Machine forms an important part of our life.

Apart from mechanical machining, there are also some techniques which use heat for the purpose of machining a work piece. There is a wide variety of machines which are used for this process such as end mill, roughing end mill, slab mill and thread mill. They just add up precision to the entire activity. So, let us know about some basic machining techniques which are used commonly during the manufacturing of the product. Before the evolution of machines, humans were deprived of many facilities and luxury that they relish today. Every component requires a certain degree of machining during their manufacturing process. There are three types of grinding techniques including surface grinding, cylindrical grinding, and optical grinding. General Machining techniques form an integral part of manufacturing.

The boring machines that are used to create these holes are subdivided into 4 categories including Horizontal boring machines, vertical boring machine, Precision boring machine and Jig machine. This process is termed as cutting and it uses either single-point or multi-point tools. Water- jet cutting and Electrical Discharge Machining are the two major types of erosion machining techniques. In the erosion machining techniques, water is used for eroding the workpiece. In this process, the workpiece is kept stationary while the cutting tool rotates on a spindle. Normally a cutting tool is chosen such that it is harder than the material which is to be cut.

Turning: This technique uses machines like Lathes for rotating the piece around the axis of rotation for the purpose of cutting, deforming, drilling knurling. The most popular heat machining techniques include welding and burning. Boring: This technique is usually adopted for enlarging the holes. General machining which is extensively used today in almost all the manufacturing processes covers a vast range of technologies and techniques.. Surface and cylindrical grinding are used for machining metals whereas optical grinding is a technique used for making specialty optics. From removing the excess material to providing the proper shapes to the work piece, machining has a vital role in the formation of the final product
